Subject: RE: [chromapolaris] question about a pristine

you don't even need to retune... you can just turn the voices on yourself (and i do forget the sequence).

the filter will self-oscillate, so you can turn the resonance up, set the sustain decay all the way up,

hold a key down, and if you can hear the whistle and control it with the filter cutoff, at least you know that part works.

if it plays, but autotune fails, then something is wrong but you can probably get at least some working voices out of it.

if not, then hopefully: it could just be a bad analog switch chip (4053 iirc, been a long time), it is between the control signals and the vco/vcf chips

and switches between tune and regular. if it's stuck pointing at tune, you'll be able to autotune but not hear anything in normal mode;

if it's stuck the other way, autotune will turn all the voices off but if you turn them on it should work. there's one per voice though

(also iirc) so it would be odd if a bunch blew out at once.

worst case: polarises used to be very cheap compared to xpanders, and used the same chips, so possibly someone has harvested

the 3374s and 3372s from it. in that case, the 'click' you are hearing could be analog ground bounce or something like that.

hopefully this is not true, but it's possible.

Try the autotune procedure (you will have to refer to the manual since I'm not near my polaris)

My polaris didn't work until I did this so maybe you will also be lucky.

hello everyone,
I'm sorry to bother you but I have a question for you about an apparently nonworking polaris in absolutely phenomenal physical condition. it was working prior to being mailed to me and now it doesn't produce any sound but it lights up and all membrane switches respond normally.
I have tried all the various hidden functions. tried slaving it to an SY77 and to a drum machine and to a Prophet 600. nothing doing.
but the metronome sounds. and when I hit the keys, they make a muted kick sound, and it's obvious that they're transmitting. the ADSR affects the volume of the sound. it doesn't get any higher or lower. and that's the only sound I'm getting out of the polaris!
I'm currently trying to get ahold of a power drill so I can get at the insides... have a bunch of stripped screws so I can't simply unscrew it.
if you have any ideas as to what the problem might be, I would appreciate your input.
thanks very much!
