I believe 27256 will work, as long as you program the upper half, rather than the lower half, but I haven't tried it. But there's probably nothing wrong with the old ones, if you erase them and reprogram them. The fading that occurs over 30 years is just the charge leaking off, not a permanent degradation.

Why are you installing new voltage regulators? Are they burnt out?
