I wonder if anyone has compared the A149.1 with the blacet module:

These buchla inspired ones look interesting - but what other modules
would I need to get the best out of them

the upper two outputs of the a149/1 are quantized to semitones,
so these voltages are good for controlling the pitch of vco's.
other good candidates for a149/1 modulations are vcf's,
vc envelopes, vca's, wave multipliers, virtually all modules
with cv inputs.

149.2
the a149/2 outputs gate signals (only high/low), so you can use them
to trigger envelope generators, sequencers, switches and such stuff.

monosynth so my current system has many filters but only has one VCO,
I will add another VCO but I prefer resonance and feedback to using
loads of VCOs
anyway i recommend a second vco, as it will add a lot
of new possibilities, plus you can do fm and cross-modulation
with two vco's.
best wishes
