I don't quite get what a138 does. If I don't plug anything into the first input does that mean I can effectively control the output so it can't go over 5v or under 0v somehow my brain and the description in the pdf are not connecting.

you can do this with the a138 mixer modules,
which were manufactured after april 2004.

or you can use an a129/3.
