Hi Michael,
I'm in the process of planning the build of a wooden cabinet for my synth. After several
months of searching the net and taking advice from this and other fora, it seems the only
way is to home-build, or commission a carpenter to build a bespoke cabinet. Like many
others, I'm making a sloped bank. Mine will be 6 rows high (2 at 45 degrees, 4 at 80
degrees) at 168HP wide. I have opted to avoid the wooden rails as this just seems a poor
choice from an engineering point of view. To keep the wood-working easy, I'm simply
screwing in some 19" rack uprights to which I can mount standard cases. Again, for
simplicity, I have opted to make it 2 x 84HP, rather than trying to make a 168HP wide
cabinet (I have dealt with Proma before. Although they were really helpful, they (like many
other German companies when I lived there) do not accept credit/debit cards making
payment really difficult. In the end, I resorted to buying Euros and sending the cash. Far
from ideal). I'll be stripping out the enclosure around the standard cases, leaving only the
rack ears and the horizontal rails. This will keep down the weight and reduce the depth
required. I can also mount my 19" rack effects with their home-made breakout panels.
I had a look at some beautiful English oak today, and it should come to around £100. I'll
also be looking at some reclaimed timber over the next few days. Using cheaper wood
(e.g. Ikea shelves are really cheap) or even MDF which can then be covered or painted
would significantly bring down the price, That said, after spending so much on modules,
it seems a shame to skimp on the case.
As for mounting rails and rack stuff, check out eBay (as ever). I got some stuff there ( I
currently have a home-brew 19" rack case).
Good luck,
Stuadh
