Hello Everybody,
My name is Roel and I live in The Netherlands. I'm 34. Since I come across synths in general I'm drooling over knobs, jacks, leds (running leds on a sequencer, yes please!) and so on. Love analog sound, have also digital, which can produce with enought creativity many interesting sounds.
What you all want to know is my gearlist. Oké, here we go.
Korg MS20
Roland XP10
Yamaha ANIX
Korg Prophecy
Teisco 110F
Roland Promars
Moog Prodigy
Yamaha DX100
Doepfer A100 (22 modules)
I use Alesis Microverb 4 and Qadraverb for effects. I have a very old Samick 16 channel mixer. I have also the sequencer from the 100M system, 2 drumsequencers from Electro Harmonix, Korg Rhythm 55 and also Cubase audio.
I don't know if you al familiar with these machines. Let's take a quick view. MS20, a perfect machine for effect making. My experience if you start with MS20 and you go on to more complex machines and return after long period of time to it, the complexity of the other synth has put you in a sort of labyrinth and you don't know anymore you to make special sounds with the MS20. In your mind you find your self on another level and have to go back to the roots! Fascinating!!!
XP10. I've heard a lot of people (especially from the dance music) who claimed that with piece of shit you couldn't make new sounds. Wrong. Totally wrong. You can and can in fact create thousands of new sounds by combining the existing sounds and put them through 2,5 octaves keyshift. I can assure you, some really weird stuff can come out of it!
ANIX. Virtual analog. Great synth. Has a squencer and an arpegiator on board. Prophecy, incredible complex synth, with no less then 287 parameters. The possibilities are dizzying! Can make a wide range of sounds. The arpegiator is good one, free programmable, can do the stuff that sequencers do! Teisco. Well this is a special one. You plan fabulous leads with this one, has a lot to offer and is perfect for 1001 space and other effects. Has a low on the VCO's, so great rain drop effects are possible. It's heavy and weight a hefty 20 kg, due to the metal case! O yes, watch it in the dark you can see how the sounds travels via VCO, VCF too the VCA!!! Another special one. Never thought I would track this baby down. It's a trimmed Jupiter 4. Losing 2 VCO's, but believe it or not this machine can produce sounds, it can make tick deep basses, broad strings and blow away a lot of other analog synths. It has an overdrive on the VCA, so you can play cracks in the wall if you like!! A real classic! Prodigy. A much talked about synth. I love it's sound. It has enormous power. Mostly I combine it with the promars, so a huge wall of sound fills the room. DX100. There was a time almost every one had one! Now the popularity has gone down, in favor of the analogs. Still if you want bells or gong, these machine produce them magnificient. They can deliver wide black sounds for dark ambient. Although a pain in the arse to program, I will never part of them, they deliver some strong sounds which I don't want to miss.
And then. Yes my power and glory: A-100.
Here are my modules
Row one: A-110 (2), A-114, A-115, A-116, A-138 (exp), A-120, A-121, A-131(exp), A-130.
Row two: A-190, A-118, A-148, A-145, A-146, A-160, A-161, A-180, A-138 (lin), A-170, A-140 (2).
That's a basic II system. I'm going to expand now with a third row.
Row three: A-155 sequencer module, A-111 High End VCO, A-140 Env Gen, A-150 Dual voltage controlled switch, A-136 Distortion Waveshaper.
Planned row four: VCO (3x), VCF3, VCLFO, VCA, ADSR, VCADSR.
Somewhere in future the other 2 rows where I have space for will be filled among others with Triple resonance filter and I think also a frequency shifter.
I'm no techhead. So I'm not going to attack my modular system with a soldering-bolt. Still have to learn a lot about mixers, multieffects and midi. I'm new to subtractive synthesizing, but already have learned a lot. It's a dream come through patching away. It's something I always wanted to do.
I'm really addicted to analog sounds, deep basses (not house though!), weird sounds and the like. I'm no musician in the normal sense of the word. I'm more a kind of improviser and try to work my ideas out while knob fiddling or playing on the keys.
To close off. I have a huge collection of electronic music (600+) from the whole world, prog rock (600) and classical (100) and some rock albums from The Doors, Jimi Hendrix etc. Em. My Em tastes ranges from TD ('71-'88) to Lightwave and Heldon to Kitaro. Prog rock, to name a few bands: Semiramis (italian), Samla Mannas Mamma (Sweden), Magma (France), Supersister (Dutch) and Yes (english). Classical: from Mozart to Bartók.
I'm a reviewer for the dutch Klem mag (em), english Audion (em and prog rock) and since 2 issues reviewing also for american Exposé (em and prog). I may consider myself an expert on Em and an expert on the way of Prog rock.
So now you know a bit more of me!
elec (Roel).
