bakis,
when i got my a199 i started out w it inside the case as far from
the power transformer as possible but it still had some light
hum, which became more noticable when the emphasis control
was increased. this became a bother so i slid the a199 over by
1 space (i had extra room) which allowed the cable to hang out
the front. then w an rca extension i could put the spring wherever
there was room (on the shelf). this proved to be much better
soundwise. then when the space was needed again i drilled a
hole to pass the cable through the back of the case and
mounted the spring inside the a100's rack cabinet using velcro
so i'll still have access to the springs if needed.
you could try the noisier spring location inside the case since
you like that sound, though pitty to lose a vca in case you don't
like that sound all the time. i recommend you mount it outside
like i did and then just have some velcro handy for when you
want the spring closer to the transformer.
regarding using a vca to minimize hum, obviously you can 'gate'
the hum this way but remember that whatever voice is coming
through when the gate is open will still have hum.
bravo on your new vcs3!
