I have made the lower half of one of my portable cases into a
controller only section. I have a joystick (a AS unit bought before
Doepfer offered one) a custom panel with large pushbutton switches
providing manual gates, some LFOs and envelope generators and some
switch panels. Basically a good idea if you are heading towards a
live-type setup is to make a bunch of push button and toggle switch
panels and maybe some panels with large throw faders in them that can
be patched to anything. I suggested a mod/pitch bend wheel panel a
while back and the poll had positive results so maybe those will be
made and would be a great addition. That is one of the best things
about analogue synths - it is very easy to make controllers. I once
made a ribbon controller out of some 1/2" recording tape stretched
over a bare PCB. I once made a performance controller from some old
mercury switches taped into a ball. Surplus stores are your friends
here. Old gear there will give you ideas.
If you want to see old electronic cases turned into the most
beautiful sound boxes ever - check out the stuff done at Folktek -

VERY cool stuff.
