My modular (in the pics under 3DarkHours) is made up of TEN different
manufacturers (including myself :-) and believe me, modules from different
mfrs *IS* a good idea for LOTS of reasons. Variety is the spice of life.
Fitting things into a case is a minor issue and in the case of (npi) ASys,
ASol and Doepfer, not that big of an issue at all. The ASol fit fine and
play perfectly well. The ASys do have that offset issue, but there are two
ways to fix it:
1) drill new holes in the faceplates (I did this for my first few ASys)
2) Dismantle the rack and cut up the brass screwhole strip so that in pieces
it can slide inside the case and basically be a custom fit for any module
placement (takes some planning). As far as look, ASx2 and Doepfer look
great together and from a distance, nobody will ever be able to tell the
difference. It'll look like a big homogeneous silver knobbed thing :-)
Power connections are a small issue for anyone with a soldering iron and
half a brain. I can supply wiring diagrams if anyone needs them (made MANY
:-)
The bigger issues to me are going between 12v and 15v modules, and the V/Oct
and Hz/V issue. The second isn't much of an issue with current
manufacturers, as they all (to the best of my knowledge) work on V/Oct. As
far as power supplies, its an issue but not that difficult to work out.
By all means, mix and match modules! There's a reason they all exist -
because each offers something that makes it unique and desirable in the soup
of modules out there.
