The original idea is something Don Buchla and Morton Subotnick came up
with. You would have to look at Don Buchla's instrument design
philosophy and Morton Subotnick's compositional style to really wrap
your head around it.
Stored voltages are stepped random voltages over a range. The greater
N, the greater the range.
