Hi
there are two rules:
rule #1: Distortion adds overtones to signals. So if you have already a
signal which is very bright (=has many overtones), then the distortion
won't add significant and interesting changes, but will add only noise.
So use the neck pickup, do not distort the original signal, then use the
A-136 as distortion (the A-137 is quite soon over the top with an guitar).
Do not modulate the distortion itself; instead modulate the signals
amplitude which is sent to the distortion.
rule #2: playing guitarsynths (or guitar through synths) requires a
style of guitar playing which is 1000% the opposite of rock'n'roll. You
have to play very "controlled". Especially you have to provide dedicated
string damping, if you want to trigger envelopes.
To my opinion the usage of gates and triggered envelopes does not make
much sense in combination with a guitar. If you want timed events like
triggers for the guitar sound, then take them from an external
triggersource like a sequencer or a rythm machine.
It is very difficult for a machine to sync to a human beeing, whilest a
human beeing usually has no deeper problems with syncing its timing to a
machine (ok,... one single exception: drummers ;-)) )
I recently found a very nice example for this principle of
humans-sync-better-to-machines in the demo videos of the new SL-20 from
Boss:
