The problem is not, that it would not be popular :-), but you may
imagine what effort it would be wih analogue technology to achieve the
data you are asking for. The doepfer A129 vocoder system does 15 Bands
with 12 dB bandpassfilters and fills on full 19" rack.
I think an adaptive filter is better done in the digital domain.
Nevertheless multiband resonance filters can do really great sounds. For
