Hi Eric,
the springs are housed in the two small cylinders you find adjacent to the mounting of the stick itself. They are protected by a plastic plate which is held in place by four metal tongues. Pry these open with a pincer or a small screwdriver, remove the plate, remove the springs, replace the plate, bend the tongues back into the original position. Repeat with the other potentiometer and you're done.
Apparently there's also an alternative where you cut the springs:

Good luck,

Subject: 1 Recommended way to de-spring A-174 Joy Stick
Hi Folks,
I¹d like to remove the springs from my A-174 joy stick. I¹d like it to stay
where I leave it rather than snap back to center. The manual states: ³If
the spring is removed for one direction the joy stick is no longer
spring-loaded for this direction (as the spring is destroyed when removed
this cannot be re-established !).² I¹m OK with this but looking at the
mechanism, I¹m not sure of the best method of removing the spring.
Anyone done this and can share their experience and methods
Thanks,
Eric
