Eric,
I am a very clumsy german. Anything more sophisticated than, say, chopping wood scares the living daylights out of me. The de-springing of the A-174 was so easy even I could do it. Bending back the tongues may be a bit heavy-going (after all, they are meant to stay in place), but it is perfectly do-able since at one point, they were bent into their current position.
In any case, I'd like to hear about your experience. I've got two units (one sprung, the other unsprung) and they are together with the R2M everything I need controllerwise.
Best
Y

Hi York,
Thanks for the tip and the pointer to the web page. I thought the
method might be to remove the plate but on my unit the four metal
tongues are very difficult to pry open. I might try the spring
cutting technique.
Thanks!
Eric

to the mounting of the stick itself. They are protected by a plastic
plate which is held in place by four metal tongues. Pry these open
with a pincer or a small screwdriver, remove the plate, remove the
springs, replace the plate, bend the tongues back into the original
position. Repeat with the other potentiometer and you're done.
