Hey Peter...
It's the vactrol Deopfer used. Their's are much much faster
responding (read: less of the natural decay inherent with that). A
downside of this is there's much less ringing in the combined mode,
which is what your wtf'ing. The upside, little or no bleed through. I
opted for the more expensive Perkin-Elmer vactrols and a Sallen-Key
architecture. The gain n bleed through was a tradeoff I was willing
to make in order to get the marvelous ringing that goes with the P-E's
in a Sallen-Key config. If that's what your after, check out the Model 13.
In that the Doepfer unit is fitted with a resonance knob, therefore
more of a traditional filter as opposed to a filtering 12dB/oct gating
device like the M13. So the vac's he used were better suited for this
application. If anyone's noted the rather lazy response of the M12 in
high Q mode, that's what I'm talking about...and that's why the M13
has no resonance knob!
If you're thinking of simply changing the vac's to the Perkins, you
can't use the very same ones as the M13/Buchla 292, but there are
others that will improve things a bit. Better, but not the same and
while they increases the ring it greatly effects proper operation of
the three modes. It's a different filter structure.
