Hopefully I can clarify this last bit.
If I remember correctly from before the unit acted up... the rate knob no longer functions once an external source is used. With the hardwire I did I found that with a external clock source inserted the digital noise returned and was now tunable against the incoming sound.
A better mofd would be to make the lower OSC tunable.
