Group,
thanks so much for the discussion so far. My
decision so far is indeed to just buy the A-100
Mini system as is and go from there.
Yes, I could plan my own system, and it surely
would be fun, or I could even buy an existing
pre-configured A-100 system second-hand, but
although both options might save me money it
brings in a completely different angle I want to
avoid: I'm sure Doepfer has spent a lot of time
defining the system, and both the company and
this community of course know a lot more about
this system than I do. So whom am I to question
this :-)
I'll save myself the brain capacity in terms of
module configuration when I enter the
"More Modules!" Trip after I checked out the
basic system... seems like more fun overall :-)
Thanks & Cheers,
- Sebastian

System
Hey Timothy
I went that route, I started with essentially the mini
configuration
in a 6U frame, with one minor module substitution. It let me
start
expanding without a large up-front expenditure for an additional
frame
and power supply.
In retrospect, though, I ended up in the same place. It would
have
beed cheaper and easier to just start with the mini packaged
system.
There's plenty of opportunity for customization as you expand.
I ended up with a couple 3U frames anyway, so that I could
arrange the
bus the way I wanted. I might as well have started that way.
Mindless,
inexpensive, and effective.

Unless there is a significant saving over buying the modules
separately I personally would steer clear of the Minisystem -
there is
so little difference between the price of the G3 and G6 cases,
buying
a G6 case and half-filling it with modules is likely to work out
cheaper in the long run than a completely filled a G3. You could
use
the module selection in the Minisystem as a rough guide, a sort
of
'starting point for negotiations' (between you and your
wallet!).
You'll kick yourself if a week or two after buying it you decide
you
really need some more modules ("more modules, more modules,
*must*
have more modules!!!": it happened to me... :-), and then
discover
you'll also need to shell out what seems like a lot of dosh for
the
case to hold just one or two more...
