many times i have used gates passing thru a slew limiter as a 'simple gating envelope' for vca's.

The gate will produce harsh clicks on the VCA (especially annoying at
the note end!). You always need something like a slew limiter (which
then acts like an AR-envelope) between Gate and VCA-CVin.
