i also put my A108 audio input (of all 3 A108's of mine) to around 9 o'clock for non-distorted input.
so, i think this behavior of the A108 is normal and not defective.

replacing the potentiometer doesn't change anything. I don't have the
schematics of the A108 here, but there is usually an input opamp, which
has assumingly a too high amplification due to a defective or wrong
feedback resistor. For dedicated error tracing some measuring equipment
(oscilloscope, ohmmeter) and mesauring know how is needed.
