all of this is true, but also get an A196 PLL module, for weird and harsh noises.

Hi,
Do you want the sounds to originate with your modular or do you want to use
it more as a processing tool (e.g. for you drum machine)
In the latter case I suggest at least an A-119 to get sounds into the
system.
In addition, Doepfer and all the other manufacturers offer vast
possibilities for wrecking any sound; you really can't go wrong there. Apart
from the various filters take a look at wave shapers (A-116, A-136), wave
multipliers (A-137), the A-188 range of BBDs etc. And that's just Doepfer.
If you're not quite sure how to utilise your modular, the basic system
provides a very good starting point. If you later find out that you have no
use for certain modules, you can always sell them and get stuff that suits
you more.
The likely reason you hear so many old school demos is that the people that
can afford a modular tend to be a bit older and grew up with prog rock or
80ies synth pop. There's no reason a modular synthesizer can't produce
contemporary sounds, especially now that more and more digital sounds
generators and processors are developed. Check out the new DSP processor
from Doepfer, but also the Tip Top Audio and Harvestman range.
One word of caution: People tend to go for the 'Sexy' modules, like filters
and add utility modules only as an afterthought. After messing with your
gear for a while you will probably find that you need more VCA's, envelopes,
LFO's etc. The basic system also supplies you with a decent amount of these.
Hope this helps,
York

Hi Guys,
Ive spent hours and hours and hours online checking out modular gear and
(trying) to get my head around it all. For now, ive saved up enough to get
an a100 Basic System2 and im hoping for the best! :)
What I wanted to know from anyone:
Im only after modular gear for the "alive" sounds ive heard from other
peoples stuff (mainly Buchla TBH..love that sound!..But cant afford
one..anyways thats irrelevant)
Im mainly into really distorted sounds, drum n bass, mechanical/industrial
and love shaping sounds and spending hours on a sound to make it right and
come "alive".
Am I looking in the right place(Doepfer ) for my sound Ive heard allot of
the dopefer demos online and I guess the impression I get is rather really
old school, simplistic and minimal/80's (Which I dont mind and love in
certain instances)..But at the same time..Can I do more with it
What would someone recommend I get as a startup, to get this sound im
after..Shall I go for a "sound design/shaping"a100 system..Or for a "Basic
synth system"..I have read soo many links/seen youtube vids etc etc but
really I wanted to hear it from the horses mouth, so to speak before I make
my order.
Does anyone have a "sound rape a100" system they can offer advice on lol
Thanks for reading :)
