Hey there Doepfer group members,
I have another newbie question. I purchased a basic A-100 modular system
used a few months ago, and I'm still having some trouble figuring it
out. Part of the problem is the tuning of the two A-110 VCOs. I
understand that I need to give the system at least 20 to 30 minutes to
warm up, but even then, the tuning is off. If I hook up the system so
that I can hear VCO 1 and/or VCO 2 when I press keys on my MIDI
controller, VCO 1 cannot tune to the correct pitch because it is not in
range of the tuning knob. More puzzling to me is VCO 2, which seems to
produce a slightly different random note each time I press a key. (In
regard to the issue with VCO 2, is there something else that could be
causing this random-pitch effect I have made only the connections
necessary for a simple synthesizer sound. When I "sync" VCO 2 to an
output of VCO 1, this effect generally seems to go away. Please forgive
me if this is an obvious problem.)
I've tried to investigate some previous discussion threads, and I see
that several other users have had the same problem I have with VCO 1,
and the suggested solution is to follow the "adjustment procedures" on
this webpage:
http://www.doepfer.de/a110_tec.htm.
However, since I don't
even have a rudimentary understanding of electronics repair, I have no
idea what the adjustment procedures are talking about. To give you an
idea of how clueless I am, I don't even know how I would go about
"measuring the voltage" of the various components, nor do I know how to
read the schematics. I suppose I could possibly take the modules and the
instructions to a professional repair person, but clearly, repairing the
VCOs is not a job I can do myself.
I guess at this point, since I am unable and frankly unqualified to make
the sort of electrical adjustments that appear to be necessary to get my
VCOs in tune, I'm wondering if I could fix the problem simply by buying
two brand-new VCOs. Would they ship from the factory with correct tuning
and function properly once installed (If so, I'd be happy to part with
my current A-110s, which I'm sure could be calibrated by someone who
knows what he or she is doing.)
Thanks so much for your help!
Karl
