The A-133 can be treated indeed as kind of a ring modulator. To speak the
truth I never tried to use the A-133 as a ring modulator. But in principle
it should work. The main difference between A-114 and A-133 is the signal
coupling (A-114: AC coupled, A-133: DC coupled) and the internal technology:
the A-114 uses a real four quadrant multiplier (MC1496), the A-133 is
nothing but a VCA where original signal is mixed with the inverted VCA
output signal. If both signals have the same level (VCA amplification = 1)
the output result is ~ 0V. If the VCA amplification is zero the original
signal appears at the output, if the VCA amplification is max. only the
inverted signal appears. But as the VCA also has a phase delay (depending
upon the signal frequencies) and frequency limitation the result is not
perfect (worse as the frequency goes up). I'd expect that both modules sound
different as ring modulators. Maybe another member has tried this out
already. I don't have the time as I'm busy because of the upcoming
Musikmesse in Frankfurt.
