I took another look at one of the modules I didn’t have in the case and I may have a more detailed description of what’s going on.
There is a three pin header for each section. They are marked with “(GATE)” and “]”, and “(CV)” and “]”. The side with the word on it is connected to the input jack. The side with the “]” on it is connected to the OP-Amp buffer. The Center pin is connected to the bus on the power header. When the jumper is connected to the side with the word next to it (up for the GATE and to the right for the CV), the Input jack is connected directly to the bus AND through the bus to the buffer circuit and from there to the two OUT jacks on the front panel.
When the jumper is connected to the “]” side of the header, the INPUT jack is dis-connected and the buffer section only gets it’s input from some other output SENDING device connected to the bus. This is to prevent the accidental connections of two SENDERS on the bus (this should not be done), one already connected there (like an A-190 with the jumper set to SEND to the Bus), and one connected accidentally to the A-185’s input jack.
The output sections will always output what is on the BUS whether that is coming from the A-185’s INPUT jack (when the header is in the right place - the “word” side) or if something else is SENDING to the bus.
Does that make sense

I’d read that section of the manual but Figure 1 doesn’t actually show the PCB and the jumper positions; it’s a schematic illustrating the routing of the CV and Gate signals to the bus. And since I couldn’t remember whether I’d changed the jumper positions when I first had the module I thought it best to check before inserting it in the A-100 case. As it turns out I had removed them.
