Allow me to say that Scott's views aren't representative of myself or any
other Americans I know. I'm afraid a great many of the characterizations
floating around lately regarding America's leadership and foreign policy
stick. Loyalty to "American" ideals is actually in many cases diametrically
opposite loyalty to the positions being advanced by this administration.
War atrocities are war atrocities whether inflicted by foreign nationals or
ourselves. The loss of life associated with an American invasion of Iraq
could be catastrophic. The vast majority of the killing in that instance
would by Americans. Wherein lies the vaunted American moral superiority if
Americans rush into another country and take upwards of 100,000 lives,
brutally and relentlessly
There's also a case to be made, however, that Europe's reliance on the
defensive backing of American military might has caused a certain degree of
atrophy in its sense of responsibility for itself, which breeds a mood of
detached analytical superiority at extreme odds with the realpolitik of the
world. In its foreign policy (and its domestic policty) the Bush
administration is in many ways a worst-case scenario, but several European
countries are not exactly in their finest hour as to their leadership
either. To their benefit, none is saddled with and is making a mess of the
responsibilities of a superpower (or hyperpower as the French would call
it). But those responsibilities do exist.
