Our ears can't differentiate between differences in loudness very
well. You have to double the loudness for it to sound like the next
level up. That's why volume controls on TV's, radios, stereos, and
mixers are exponential controls, they double the loudness when you
increase the volume by one tick or unit.
You can use a linear mixer for audio, people do it all the time, but
you won't have good control over the mix balance. For example, if
you're mixing VCOs in a minimoog-type patch, you won't be able to
adjust the oscillator balance very well.
