"We will update the front panel pictures of the
Vactrol modules as we added the diplay LED to each
Vactrol module. I have to point out that the
photoresistor inside the vactrol is much more
sensitive than the LED/human eye combination - even if
we use low current LEDs. So you will hear a sound
change of the vactrol module in question while the LED
still seems to be dark. For details we will publish
the graph that shows the connection between LED
current and resistor change. The graph shows that the
resistors change much before the eye is able to see
anything - at least under normal illumination
conditions. This does not really surprise as the
vactrols are completely shielded against external
light and consequently the react even to minimal
illuminations that the human eye cannot detect in a
normal lighting environment.
b.t.w. We also think about a general Vactrol module
that has the resistor of the vactrol as output and a
control voltage + manual control as input (like
A-101-X). It would be a little bit a DIY-ish module as
it requires to solder the vactrol output across the
variable resistor of the circuit in question. The
vactrol output (= variable resistor) could be used to
replace (or switched in parallel) each potentiometer
that is used as a variable resistor in any circuit.
This would enable voltage control of all such
parameters as the resistance of the vactrol changes
from a few hundret Ohm up to some MOhm. Some examples
in the A-100: Vactrol based VC trigger delay (A-162),
VC Attack or Decay or Release (A-140), VC Slew Limiter
(A-170), VC Trautonium filter (A-104), VC Random
(A-118) and many more (for some of these examples of
course the VC version of the module is available too).
But even external devices could be controlled as the
vactrol output is completely isolated from the control
circuitry - provided that a variable resistor is used
to control the parameter in question.
A lot of Moogs, Korgs, and so on could be expanded by
voltage controlled features like VC LFO, VC Envelope
Generators, VC Slew/Glide devices and many more.
Of course not a module for everybody as you have to be
a bit experienced with electronics to combine the
vactrol output of the module with the device in
question.
But it's only an idea and all the other announced
modules have a higher priority."
