Your probably right about the cost.
Have used an old Yamaha CS80 for several month (I was sad when I had to give it back) the pleasure in using a ribbon controller for performance is something that needs to be experienced, hence my desire to obtain one.
I did build a crude ribbon controller once using magnetic tape and graphite powder but it was to maintenance heavy. The graphite wore off and needed replacing regularly.
