Hi,
I also a recent convert to the Wonderful World of Modular
Analogue Synthesis. After going through a similar process of
looking at all the systems, it came down to a choice between
Doepfer and ASys Minisystems.
I chose the ASys Minisystem for the reason already mentioned
in this thread, being in Britain, it worked out as slightly better
value (this position is of course reversed on Mainland Europe).
Of the two systems, there are plusses and minuses for each. It
might be worth asking this same question on the ASys group.
I have since expanded with a number of second-hand ASys and
Doepfer modules. It appears to me that Doepfer is better value
at first glance, but you are not always comparing like with like.
For example, I have the RS80 LFO and the A146 LFO2. The
RS80 is a much more versatile beast, but the A146 is cheaper,
and has an addition feature of positive square wave. In other
cases, the equivalent Doepfer module is not only cheaper, but
(on paper, anyway) better equipped. The beauty is being able to
pick and choose. I shall be buying from both companies for a
long time to come.
All in, both Minisystems offered a great place to start, but you'll
find yourself hooked almost immediately. I now check the
Doepfer and ASys groups, Sound on Sound and Ebay almost
daily looking for 2nd had modules.
Have fun,
Stuadh
PS It is true that you will need an adaptor to use ASys modules
in a Doepfer case, but this isn't expensive. The ASys case,
however comes with 7 slots ready to accept Doepfer modules.
