You have to see past the jacks and knobs and bear in mind that you're paying
for more than the materials and immediate soldering labor. You're also
paying for years of the most innovative and artistic synth R&D by arguably
the best mind ever brought to bear on electronic instruments, as an
extraordinary labor of love. And yes, buying it isn't compulsory. I'm
awfully pleased with my Doepfer, but among the aspects I'm most pleased
about has been the attention Dieter's given to absorbing and interpreting
Buchla's innovative ideas. I'll have to get by without a 200e because I can
barely afford the instruments I already have. But declaring a Ferrari a
waste of money for commuting to work by no means diminishes the roaring
brilliance of the thing on a long, twisting stretch of blacktop.
