Julian,
easiest solution is to have a front panel that's slightly higher so that
the sockets are not seen when rack mounted, would look good on a
freestanding unit as well I expect.

approach
My 2 pence....
I have a drehbank. I really like the way it can be racked or
free standing, with the addition or removal of ears.
I have used it in both ways, acocrding to situation.
What i dont like, however, is the way i have to leave a gap on
the top, when itw rackmounted, in order to accomidate the cabels.
Ive seen other products adressing this problem, with similarly
encased products, in various ways. Having recessed sockets on the
rear for example - but then theres that whole depth of case
thing too.
I dont know what the ultimate solution is, so im just making
comments really.
In the case of my drehbank, in my skb cases, i suspect if the
socket were mounted on the side, rather then the top / rear of the
case, theyd fit with the rack, and be out of the way both
racked, and desktop mounted. But then maybee not, and maybee people
wouldnt like them on the side either.
As i say, just thoughts..
