bryan,
actually, its been done. hugh lecaine designed such a device for his studio
in canada back in the 60s/70s.
after reading, many years ago, an article by walter carlos in "electronic
music review" about adding variable speed to tape recorders using a precision
(test) oscillator and power amplifier, i tried it out on an old tape machine but
being driven by a vco - created some nice wow / flutter type effects and the
"moaning' ( ) sounds created by the changing speeds made any old acoustic
instrument lying around a great electro-sonic source ! my old beat up "consumer"
class machine couldn`t handle too much change too fast but for something kludged
up from bits i had lying around at the time, it was great !
best to all -
dave
