The ring mod on my nord modular also can be modulated from no
modulation, through amplitude mudlation and then to ring modulation
with a single "knob", and this change can be "voltage" controlled. I
mentioned once before on this list how useful that feature was. I
have rigged up a similar response in the analog world using a PAIA
balanced modulator and several Doepfer modules. The basic idea is
that a bipolar modulating signal is given a positive bias so that it
is all positive. When a vca for the control voltage is opened, the
control voltage goes from no modulation to amplitude modulation.
When the bias signal is gradually eliminated, the modulation goes
from straight am to ring modulation.
Now, if I am doing this correctly, these are two separate processes
which the Nord combines in a single control. When you go from from
straight to AM to RM, I would assume the bias starts to be removed
when the control reaches the halfway "am" mark.
If I recall correctly from the days of my long lost and misspent
youth, the Buchla 200 had a similar feature in its ring modulator.
Maybe one of the more technical folk on this list can confirm if it
was done in the way I have outlined above. (Peter, are you there )
