Hello, all!
As I'm new to the list, I thought I would introduce myself. My name is
Kim Johnsson (of the male variety), I'm 37 and I consider myself a
relative newcomer to the hobby that is music. I started producing
(overstatement) instrumental music (overstatement ) in 1993 with a PC
and a soundcard, and I've been doing it frighteningly unproductively
ever since, but obviously the tools have been upgraded. I would also
never ever call myself a musician.
I have grown increasingly interested in the technology involved, and as
of last year particularly in analog synths, of which I have acquired a
reasonable amount, according to my girlfriend. I have had a Nord Modular
since 1998, and I absolutely love it, but I'm just a hardware kind of
guy, so me getting into hardware modulars was just a matter of time.
Last week I ordered my first Doepfer product (I see Herr Doepfer himself
is here as well, that's quite nice...GrĂ¼sse von Finnland!), the 6u rack
case, of which I see that there's a debate going on. I fully agree that
300+ euro is quite a steep price for getting no apparent functionality.
However, I would also say that as far as I can tell, the price of it
appears to be fair, but I have to admit that I was initially quite
shocked over it. It will probably hurt as much every time, but a man's
gotta have what a man's gotta have. I can also see why people would be
interested in optional ways of getting their modules racked. But I digress.
My original plan was to buy a reasonably priced batch of modules per
month, such that the 6u case would clearly be the most expensive single
purchase. This way it would take me quite some time before I actually
get anything usable out of my system, but on the bright side, adding one
or two modules at a time gives me the chance to really get to know the
possible applications of each module before again expanding. I really
like that plan.
However, I am totally spineless, so I just won an eBay auction on a full
6u system, so I can get down to business immediately. I will try to
remain true to the idea of my original plan, and explore the system in
small increments (virtual small expanding subsystems, if you will).
What will I do with it I'm aiming to create long evolving self-playing
noodles (term from the Nord Modular mailing list, don't know whether
it's established modular lingo or not), but also for monosynth duties
and simply just, well, enjoying it.
That's it for me at this point. Looking forward to reading this group,
and possibly sometimes even writing to it.
Cheers,
Kim
