I have the Mini System, with all the default modules installed. I think it is
an excellent entry level modular. I also have a G6 case and a MAQ 16/3
that I will be fitting into a custom cabinet later.
The Mini, IMHO, is a good comparison to the Roland System 100M series
modular as it comes with everything needed to make a basic modular
patch. Then it also has the very useful MIDI/CV A190 interface as well
as a ring mod and noise modules. To my ears, the Mini sounds very
much like a System 100M more than a Moog or similar. There are very
few shortcomings with the Mini compared to other similarly scaled
modulars. The module choices are well thought out and you can
make some very interesting sounds with it alone.
I think the Mini is good because it gives you something you can use
right now, right away and do useful and clever things. Then it doesn't
become redundant later on, just because you bought a G6 case. That's the
whole point of a modular is that you have enough to get started and then
you can pick and choose how big you want to go.
The included A190 is good because then, if I understand correctly, you can use
a Buss Access module to give the other cabs access to your MIDI buss.
The Mini is indeed "only" an entry level system but once you're in,
it's relatively cheap to continue on.
