"we are very busy as we want to show some new modules
at the NAMM in January. During the last few days the
prototype of the BBD module was assembled, tested and
corrected/improved and I'm confidential that it will
be ready for NAMM. After the first tests with the new
BBD circuits I have changed my mind (in my last
messages I was not sure if we will manufacture a BBD
module - now I am !). After playing with the prototype
(which looks very confused in the meantime because of
the many additional soldered parts and wires) I
really love the imperfections and drawbacks of the
BBDs. I can say that it can be a very extreme sounding
module and it will be up to the musician to use it in
a standard application (normal flanger/chorus/short
delay) or beyond the usual conditions. E.g. the BBD
circuits are normally allowed/specified for a minimum
clock rate of 10kHz. Yesterday we modified the (of
course voltage controlled) clock oscillator so that it
can go down to a few hundred Hz. Completely strange
sounds appear at low clock frequencies as the BBDs are
operated out of their specifications. It sounds very
lofi, a bit like a bit cruncher or a the A-112 at low
clock settings. The reason for the strange sound is
not only the low clock frequency but even the BBD
behaviour as the 2048 capacitors of the circuit have
"problems" to keep their charges as the clock
frequency becomes smaller. In principle a BBD is made
of a lot of capacitors (2048 for our module) and the
charges are forwarded from one capacitor to the next
one at each new clock. So it's nothing but an analog
shift register but limited to a minimum clock rate of
~ 10kHz. At lower frequencies signal losses appear (in
addition to the always existing poor signal of a BBD
device). I will do some MP3's and publish them
a.s.a.p.
For the rest of this week the SC-filter prototype has
to be assembled and tested and next week the core of
the universal AD/DA module is planned (smd board with
processor and delay memory) . I will give you details
as soon as I know more.
Since 2 weeks we even have much more web space
available so that we will put more sound examples to
our web site. But there are so many jobs to do and we
have to decide what to do first.
Best wishes
Dieter"
