Backgrading within all 2.x versions does work without any problem. I
have to admit, to me it sounds much more like a hardware fault than a
problem of Murrays software.

I installed upgrades in seven or eight JX3Ps for different people, and
all of them now are running on 2.7 or 2.8 without any problem.

I can't judge your situation from here, but I think it would be very
helpful if you would let a skilled technician have a look on your synth.
