Hello David! Welcome to the group! You can say a big thank you to your friend for giving you this. And this is your first synth You have made a great choice, both for the sounds and the versatility of the MP4.

I wouldn't worry too much about the hold button, the electrical contact is probably just dirty inside the button. It will probably work more and more each time you use it, as pressing the button will clean the contacts.
