I have EXACTLY the same problem and setup as you-Lion/Win XP/M1000 with firmware 1.03
I can save you a lot of wasted hours-believe me I tried everything out there and yes they all crash my M1000. I didn't bargain on such a headache and a waste of time when my matrix 1000 came in the mail...it really depressed me for a while.
Basically you have two options : 1) As I think someone said, there's a Cubase editor out there - I run it on boot camp xp on a laptop and it's the only editor that won't crash the Matrix. Unfortunately it only has mod matrix presets so you can't edit everything but you can control the majority of the parameters. Sysex Librarian for Osx will load and save banks without crashing. That's about it, I tried them all nothing else worked :(
2) (my current plan) sell your matrix and buy another with newer firmware.
I believe (albeit with no evidence) the 1.03 firmware can't handle Sysex too well (actually none of them do even the later ones the CPU is slow but at least the 1.11 versions don't seem to crash, for others anyway.)
Updating your firmware is not pratical if you're like me- it involves using an EPROM burner or sourcing an updated EPROM from somewhere (how on earth
)
It's an old synth, sadly you can't just download an update via midi file or something!!!!
