thanks - i'm familiar with the problem of it getting overloaded on power-on, i've had to power it off and let it sit for a few pretty consistently too.
but the system reset worked - i had to do it a couple of times, but it worked the second time. maybe holding it down longer (with the flashing '@' symbol) helped.
