According to the manual, page 10: Pedal #1 is the continuous / volume ("rocker-style") pedal input.
Someone on the list was correct: in order for the pedal to have any effect, you must route it to a parameter using the modulation matrix.
According to the manual, page 34: to route the pedal (as MOD SRC) to the destination (MOD DEST), use modulation source #16 (PED1).
Maybe not all your patches have the pedal routed to anything in the mod matrix, hence why you are not hearing anything, if you have even tried it (sounds like you don't have a pedal yet, and are looking to make sure you buy the right kind). I have a Roland EV-5 expression pedal and intend to try it out on my M6 in the next 10-14 hours. Stay tuned.
