But I can't make it work!
At least not yet.
Hi folks, this is my first post. And that was my first emoticon or whatever you call those things.
I had a 707 back long . . . . long ago. I got tired of happy memories so I snagged one recently and then a 727 for good measure. What fun! I'm sync'ing a pair of 960 sequencers and a modular with them. It's more fun than I imagine having hair (again) would be.
So I'm reading in the back of the manual and the MIDI implementation chart says it DOES transmit and receive sysex, with the comment "Rhythm Sequence". Hmmm . . . .
So I research but find nothing about initiating a dump from the device. I look further through the fine print in the implementation and sure enough, there's all kinds of data about the handshaking protocol and sysex messages. The sysex implementation
does
exist inside these machines. It's all right there in the back of the manual(s).
More research and I find that there was once a program for the Atari ST (and I'm pretty sure for the C64) that would transmit and receive sysex dumps from a 707. It was called something like "TR707 Dumpstor" from "Music Service Software" which was apparently a guy from Wisconsin named Dean K. Richard.
Whew! Lotta good that did me. I'm still stuck. I'm weird enough that I'd actually buy an ST (again) if anyone had a copy of this software they'd sell.
Aside from that, if we (collectively) can figure this out (even if it takes a while), what a service it would be for all us 707/727 fans who don't want to pay big $ for those pesky memory carts that don't hold much anyways.
