I spent Friday morning getting the 707 mostly finished and in its case. I had
found some of them, but your pic of the blue wires revealed the means of
getting the hats working again. Hats off to you! Of course decay pots went on
right away. What value caps are you using for extending the envelopes
I
tried a few but decided to leave it for later.
Since reconnecting some of the gate array wires, my PCB mods sound less
drastic than they did before, though this is largely a good thing, as the overall
sound has improved. FM-ing one clock to another I found seldom useful, but
there is the odd occaision. Far more versatile has been feeding the envelope
outs for a given sound (via ICs 38, 39) to their corresponding 555 clock at pin
5. Makes the bass more solid, and an almost tabla-like bend on the toms. Also
imparts a physics-defying sound to the hats.
My only dislike about the unit as it is now is that the pitch controls are quite
twitchy and a bit limited. Only about the last ten percent of the pots turn varies
the pitch. Also, since I used very smooth pots, you barely have to look at them
before the pitch changes. I am going to probably redo some of my clock
board, maybe switchable caps.
Once I figure out how to optimise some of these bench photos, I will try to post
a few, and some audio soon!
Off to play..
