yes, each pin corresponds to one (or one pair) of the instruments:
BD1/2, SD1/2, LT, MT, HT, RIM/COW, CP/TAMB, OH/CH. that is except for
the ride/crash, which has a different clock input that i mentioned in
a later email. i don't know which pins are for which sounds, i just
hooked them up and then mounted the knobs after testing them.
basically what's going on is the samples are like 32khz or whatever,
and there is a corresponding fixed 32khz squarewave coming out of a
chip and connecting to all of the clock input pins. disconnecting
them gives you clock inputs into which you can send individual
variable-speed squarewave 555 oscillators, which act as individual
variable-speed sample playback clocks.
the pots i used are pretty small, they're like stompbox pots except
the shaft is a little longer. i mounted them all at the bottom of the
case, underneath the corresponding sound names. the board with the
oscillators is just kind of crammed in between the pots and the two
main boards. i lined the 555s all up in a row to make the board
narrow and long.
hot sounds: the snare is really bitchin tuned down, it's like this
heavy tight smashing sound. tuned up it's nice and march-y sounding.
the tamborine is also really great low down, it sounds like this
faraway clanging down at the shipyard or something. of course
everything else sounds cool too. the sounds really lose
their "realism" (great!) when tuned either up or down, i think this
is because they are only eight bit, nice and chunky. also you hear
the aliasing noise when you tune them down below the frequency of
their anti-aliasing filters.
let me know if you have any other questions,
greg
