Hah, that's funny....i just had my 626 opened yesterday, i'd like a
copy of the schematics too but I'm guessing we'd have to buy 'em from
Mark Gliksky cause it doesn't have much hype attached to it.
I found the 626 uses a single 32-pin 2Mbit Mask ROM for it's 30
samples..... the largest eprom's in 32-pin size is 4Mbit though, so
you could easily double it's sample banks and just add a single switch
to toggle the last (currentley unused) address-line. As soon as my
eprom burner comes I'm gonna dump that eprom for inclusion in the
707/727 multiple banks.
As far as the sample info on the 727/707 ROMS, I think it is quite
simple. The Ride(chime) & Crash(guiro) of course are on there own ROM
chips, 6-bit unsigned integer raw audio (easy to open in audio
editors)...... but the rest of the sounds are on another two ROMS.
According to the service manual, they are interleaved quite
simply.....sounds that are shared (ie. BD1 & BD2) have occupy the same
adreesses, except one has even adresses & one has odd....you'd have to
write a small application that would organize new samples in this
way....but it's a simple routine & probably within my C++ scope. The
idea would be two install two larger eproms in the place of those, so
that you could select combinations of ROM A and ROM B....this is
probably better than having them all on one ROM (like the 626),
because the way you organized sample banks would be fixed.
Anyways, I think some cheesy beatbox samples would work quite
well....i wouldn't want to waste a bank on , say, the SK-1's drum
sounds....esspecially when that could be dedicated to some high
quality studio samples of kit's (i've got some excellent ones).....I'm
thinking more along the lines of the hiphop kit's on the Dr. Rhythms
rather than, say, the rock kit's on the R8 :)
