Probably it's because something sticky has been spilled into it.
Stripping down the top panel and carefully washing the plastic buttons
and case parts in warm water should help. Make sure it's properly dried
before you put it back together - don't try and dry it off near a heater
or anything in case the plastic melts and distorts.
