Have a look at the value of the resistor you're replacing with a pot.
Pick some sensible multiple (like, if it's a 10k resistor, find a 22k
pot to get twice as long a decay at maximum, 47k for around 5 times
longer etc), and fit that with a small series resistor so that the decay
resistor is never shorted out completely.

Should be repairable - see if you can trace the signal back from the DAC
and see what happens.
