If you use a audio signal that has sufficient level (1Vss or more) no A-119
is necessary unless you need the envelope and gate derived from the input
signal.

Normally exponential mixers and VCAs are used for audio and linear for CV.
But that's not imperative and you may even use it the other way round (e.g.
a linear VCA for amplitude modulation with an LFO). An exponential VCA will
generate a morwe "crispy" sound than a linear one with the same envelope
signal.
