Technically speaking you can reverse the plug orientation ONLY if you
do on both ends and ONLY if you make sure on the 10-pin plugs that
the socket (the cable end) us lined up to the -12V pins and doesn't
over hang that end of the header at all. The cables are just cables -
no electronics involved. The cables use 2 wires for each voltage/gnd
connection. the 2 columns of the headers are the same for each row
(-12v, GND, +12v, +5v etc.) so should work even if only one column is
plugged in though that cuts down the current handling ability of the
cable. As you may notice the page referenced below does not mention
the red stripe at all but it does stress "Pay attention that applying
other than the described voltages or changing the polarity will
result in the module’s instant destruction !" This will for sure
happen if the cable ends are nor oriented the same at both ends.
Doepfer has made this easy be printing the voltages next to the pins
on all the modules I remember. In practice you should make sure all
modules in your system have the same cable orientation and it it
would be a good idea to match the orientation of factory delivered
modules that have the cable attached already - just so you don't mess
up when you re-arrange them in the future (and you WILL re-arrange
them in the future!). A good arrangement would be to have the red
stripe always at the -12v pins that way the cable will be easy to use
on both 10 and 16 pin headers.
