tricky question ;-)
in my opinion it is better to start with a not so big system.
everybody has different demands in a modular, so nobody
can really tell which modules are a good choice for you.
i guess it is best to buy some basic modules, and then
you will see, which modules are needed to expand the system,
making it more powerful and suitable for your purposes.
you know, in a modular system nearly everything makes
sense somehow.
the racks are a matter of taste. i personally like
the doepfer racks, they are robust and it is very easy to
move modules around. a handmade wodden case can look great
and you can use a really big power supply to power all the
modules. but it will be much more expensive and it depends
on the skills of the builder, how good it will look and
work in the end.
