John,
Welcome to the group.
I'm not sure, but I don't think the MAQ works this way. It has 'one-shot'
mode, which plays the sequence through when triggered with a midi note (I'm
pretty sure that's how it works, I don't use one shot) but not one note at a
time, which I think is what you want to do.
Have you got the A-155 sequencer That would allow for note-by-note advance
using the STEP IN socket. You would need some sort of MIDI/gate convertor,
or an extra audio out from a sampler, etc, and other modules to create a
gate signal (A-119). Of course, this would not be best if you want to
sequence a MIDI module..... If that is the case, make the sequencer you
want in REAKTOR!
If you have tips or tricks for using the MAQ, feel free to share. I love
mine (2) but there are still things I wish they could do that don't seem
possible.
For example: no shuffle! What I do for this is to use just the CV out of
MAQ to the VCO, and then use a shuffled trigger pattern from a drum machine.
It requires some organization if you want to recall anything down the
road. I personally use the IMPULSE voice from the MachineDrum, but Rim Trig
out on a TR-707 should work. Alternatively, try the sampler out to A-119
again, but this might not be as tight.
You may also get a result by using the timing function on row 2 to mix up
the rhythm of row one. I know this would not be the same as making up the
rhythm as you go, but it can get pretty complex.
Anyway, good luck.
